WM Motor’s Founder, Chairman and CEO, Freeman Shen, was previously Board Member and Group Vice President at Geely while serving as Chairman of Volvo Cars after overseeing its aquisition from Ford in 2010. Freeman established WM Motor in 2015 alongside a team of leading automotive industry veterans with over 150 years of collective experience in automotive business and manufacturing. Shanghai was chosen as the location for the company’s headquarters, with a global R&D headquarters established in Chengdu, Sichuan Province as well as a regional headquarters in Beijing.
WM Motor has two smart, pure electric, long range SUV’s currently in mass production. Both vehicles are highly connected, equipped with advanced on-board software and a user interface that extends the driver’s connected, mobile lifestyle into the cabin. WM Motor’s in-cabin smart AI assistant ‘Xiaowei’ controls most hardware and software functions through natural voice commands.
WM Motor’s first model, the EX5, (recently
updated to a 2020 variant, the EX5-Z), was launched at the
end of 2018 and became the first single model released by a Chinese EV startup to exceed 30,000 sales.
The EX5-Z is equipped with ‘touchless’ technology, which takes most of the regular manual tasks off the
driver’s hands via natural voice control and advanced remote connectivity functions
On the safety side, the EX5 has been awarded a 5-star safety rating under C-NCAP, China’s testing standard. Although awaiting C-NCAP testing, the EX6 Plus has been built to the same safety standards. In addition, all vehicles can be equipped with the full suite of Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance (L2 ADAS) functions, adding additional safety and peace of mind.
The Company’s second model, the EX6 Plus, was released in Q4 2019. With a larger body than the EX5-Z, the EX6 Plus is built to carry more, with seating for up to 6 and plenty of storage. The new model has undergone cold climate testing of WM Motor’s advanced Thermal Management 2.0 system, which monitors and regulates battery temperatures to maintain long range in even the harshest conditions. Thermal Management 2.0 is now available across WM’s entire range.
In late 2016, WM Motor began construction of its first Industry 4.0 manufacturing facility in Wenzhou,
Zhejiang Province, and became the first emerging Chinese EV company to have (i) a self-owned and
operated manufacturing facility and (ii) products undergoing mass delivery. The Wenzhou facility has
current production capacity of 100,000 units per annum and full capacity of 200,000 units per annum.
The Wenzhou facility deploys high precision autonomous robotics from industry leading manufacturers including JIER, Kuka and ABB, achieving the highest operating efficiency and production standard.
The Company’s second manufacturing facility in Huanggang, Hubei Province, completed construction in Q4 2019 and is expected to undergo SOP in Q4, 2020. The second facility will have initial production capacity of 150,000 units per annum and maximum capacity of 300,000 units per annum.
Both current models are built on WM Motor’s proprietary skateboard platform called the ‘Ajax’ platform. The design accommodates the installation of a large array of prismatic battery cells, producing a maximum range of 520km NEDC. Battery cells are sourced from several renowned battery manufacturers including CATL and Tafel. Ajax’s battery pack and modules are designed and installed in-house by WM Motor, which guarantees packing quality. Battery longevity and range are safeguarded by WM’s own Thermal Management 2.0 liquid cooling and heating system.
WM Motor has since built an Online-to-Offline (O2O) distribution model consisting of a proprietary e-commerce platform and offline showrooms, supplemented by a franchised physical dealership network. This ‘4S’ network is made up of Spaces (large-scale experience locations), Stores (smaller-scale retail outlets), Stations (service centres), and Spots (flexible maintenance and repair locations). With the exception of WM’s Spaces, all locations are owned and operated by our franchisees, or Smart Mobility Partners (SMP’s). Total locations in China have now reached 150, giving WM Motor significant reach which continues to expand.
WM Motor customers have access to a range of charging solutions. Upon purchase of each vehicle, customers
receive one home charger for overnight charging. In addition, customers have access to WM Motor’s
charging network of over 200,000 public chargers nationwide. These chargers are operated by 10+ charging
operators and registered to WM Motor’s own GETnGO
app, which provides an easy search and payment
solution for all users.
GETnGO also provides the platform for WM Motor’s Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) offerings, which will include ride hailing, renting, and car sharing services. These services are currently operating under pilot programs and will gradually be introduced regionally, and then nationwide.
